How day counts work
The difference is end midnight minus start midnight, in whole days. Weekdays skip Saturday and Sunday. The count does not include the start date and does include the end date when the times are midnight-to-midnight — the same way many “days until” widgets work. If you need inclusive hotel nights, add 1 or use nights = days.
Worked example
From Monday 2 March 2026 to Monday 9 March 2026 is 7 days. Weekdays in that span are 5. A hotel stay those two Mondays is often 7 nights only if you leave the following Monday; check-out the next Monday morning is 7 nights, not 8.
Statutory holidays still count as weekdays here. Court and insurance deadlines sometimes mean “business days excluding holidays.” Confirm with the office that set the date.
The start day is not in the count
From 2 March 2026 to 1 April 2026 is 30 days. The page takes end midnight minus start midnight. It does not count 2 March, and it does count 1 April. That is the same convention as “how many days until,” and it is why a Monday to the next Monday is 7, not 8. Hotel nights are a separate question. Checking in on 2 March and checking out on 1 April is 30 nights, which happens to match this count. Checking out on the morning of day 30 of a stay is not “30 plus the start day” unless the front desk says it is. Read the reservation.
Weekdays skip Saturday and Sunday and still include statutory holidays that fall on a Monday through Friday. From 2 March to 1 April 2026 the weekday tally is the weekdays among 3 March through 1 April, not among a business-day calendar that drops Good Friday. A court, a school, or an insurer that says “10 business days excluding holidays” is asking for a count this page does not do.
The sign of the number
If the end date is before the start date, the day count is negative and the weekday count follows it. That is useful when you are measuring how late something is. It is confusing when you swapped the boxes by accident. The add or subtract days calculator is the other direction: you know the start and a length, and you want the landing date. Use this page when you already have both dates. Neither page stores what you type.
Common questions
Does this include the first day?
The raw difference between two calendar dates does not count the start day. A Monday to the next Monday is 7 days.
What about holidays?
Holidays still count as weekdays if they fall Monday–Friday.
